After the dissolution of the Abbey, garden boundary walls were built across the site. Across these sixteenth century gardens a trench was cut probably during the Civil War to cover a breach made in the City Wall by the Parliamentarians. This trench was later backfilled and the site reverted to gardens until the present day.
