Summary

Just to the north of the north-west corner of the frater (CHER 10640/3) was the abbey kitchen, on the site where two seventeenth century cottages related to the cathedral now stand (CHER 10656). The kitchen was constructed in the twelfth or thirteenth century, as part of the extensive building works relating to the cloister and monastic ranges. Following the Dissolution, the communal monastic buildings for which no use could be found suffered the most, and the ‘great kitchen’, granted to the bishop in 1541, had disappeared by the 1620s.
