Summary

Part of the west monastic range of the former Abbey of St Werburgh, now the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary (CHER 10641) was St Anselm's Chapel, a chapel for the use of the Abbot. The construction of the monastic buildings probably commenced under Abbot William between 1121 – 1140. Above the abbot’s passage (see CHER 10640/2), the chapel dates to the twelfth century and was of three bays. It was altered in the seventeenth century, when the chancel, which extends over the cloister walk, was provided with a fine stucco ceiling, carved wooden screen and altar rails. The plaster vault of the nave dates to the nineteenth century.

Part of the west monastic range of the former Abbey of St Werburgh, now the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary (CHER 10641) was St Anselm's Chapel, a chapel for the use of the Abbot (1). The construction of the monastic buildings probably commenced under Abbot William between 1121 – 1140. Above the abbot’s passage (see CHER 10640/2), the chapel dates to the twelfth century and was of three bays. It was altered in the seventeenth century, when the chancel, which extends over the cloister walk, was provided with a fine stucco ceiling, carved wooden screen and altar rails. The plaster vault of the nave dates to the nineteenth century (1, 2).
