Description

Excavations recorded a considerable build up of dark earth over a Roman building over the north part of the site. To the south and in the adjacent street there appears to have been a tenth century timber building. In the medieval period evidence of the first structures date to the thirteenth or fourteenth centuries with a flagged floor and stone hearth noted. Finely carved fragments of masonry from windows or doors were rebuilt into the walls of the later buildings (1). The earliest remains were the walls and floors of a good quality Roman building that was later levelled allowing for a build up of 'dark earth' over its northern end. At the southern end of the site there appears to be evidence of a tenth century timber building. A later medieval cellar was also recorded with much post medieval rubbish pits (1).
