Full Description

The remains of a timber structure, dated to the late Saxon period by an assemblage of tenth century pottery, was identified in the southern part of the site represented by ECH5074 during excavations there in 1993 (3). The remains were described as follows: ‘over the southern part and the adjacent street there appears to have been a Saxon building. This would have been built in timber, the normal practice for domestic structures at this time. It can be dated by the pieces of pottery found with it to the tenth century. ...The Saxon building may have burnt down because the soil above it contained much charcoal’ (3). Although the remains were identified, the archaeologists decided not to excavate until it was possible to expose a larger area (3).
