Full Description
Archaeological investigations carried out on Commonhall Street in 1993 identified post medieval structural activity indicating a substantial cellar in the southern end of the site.
The evidence consisted of a substantial and well built sandstone walled cellar at the southern end of the site believed to be the cellar of an 18th century Georgian town house. It is believed that this house replaced the earlier 16th century building (CHER 10402) and partially encroached over at the western end of Pierpoint Lane. This structure survived until the middle of the 20th century and can be seen on 19th century maps. In addition, a number of post medieval rubbish and cess pits were identified containing substantial quantities of material from the 17th to 19th centuries. (1)
