Description
Prior to the commencement of improvement works, a rapid archaeological assessment was undertaken in the narrow passageway between the Grosvenor Hotel and the recently reconstructed section of city wall to the rear of properties fronting onto St John St., Chester. Three test pits were excavated up against an offset course at the base of the city wall on its west side. A stratigraphically important soil layer which separates the upstanding city wall from the offset course below was exposed but not investigated in detail. The remains of post-medieval structures and in situ deposits of Roman or sub-Roman dates were also identified.
