Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the rear of the Grosvenor Hotel in 2010 recorded traces of Roman deposits in two evaluation trenches. The evidence comprised a soft grey silty layer approximately 0.40m thick containing substantial quantities of sandstone fragments, some of which were clearly dressed. The layer was encountered at the base of trench 1 at a depth of 0.85m below current ground level. Similar deposits were encountered at the base of trench 2 at a depth of 0.50 below current ground level although in both cases the deposits were not examined in detail as they lay below the level of development impact. Limited finds were recorded from the layer comprising a single sherd Roman pottery in trench 1 (1)
