Summary

A series of post medieval brick built structures were identified during archaeological investigation to the rear of the Grosvenor Hotel during repair work to the City Wall. The initial evaluation stage identified evidence of several brick wall foundations in three test pits interpreted as belonging to a single continuous structure. In addition to the walls, a sandstone flagged floor and a make up deposit for the floor was identified. The structures were probably late post medieval to modern additions.

Full Description

Two phases of archaeological investigation to the rear of the Grosvenor Hotel and adjacent to the City Wall in 2010 was carried out in advance of and during scheduled repair work to the City Wall.

The initial evaluation stage identified evidence of several brick wall foundations in three test pits interpreted as belonging to a single continuous structure. In addition to the walls, a sandstone flagged floor and a make up deposit for the floor was identified. (1)

Subsequent investigation carried out during the repair work identified further remains associated with a series of late post medieval buildings to the rear of the hotel. (2)
