Full Description
Part of the Roman Fortress’ eastern defences, represented by a substantial masonry wall, was identified during archaeological excavations associated with the construction of a new concrete retaining buttress on the east side of the extant city wall, St John St., Chester, in 2010 (1).
The remains consisted of a north – south alignment of large, squared and dressed sandstone blocks, measuring up to c0.6m by 0.6m by 0.3m represented in situ elements of the lower courses to a partially collapsed wall structure identified during previous investigations as the Roman fortress wall. Tooling marks, consistent with those recorded on masonry from the Roman stone defences elsewhere within the fortress wall circuit, were also noted, and mortar was adhering to the upper surface. The walls’ construction trench was clearly visible in the first century turf and clay rampart at this location (CHER 8205/1), and the 0.3m space between the rear of the wall and the edge of the cut had been filled with small angular sandstone fragments and mortar (1). Investigation at former County Library, St John Street, demonstrated the presence of the Roman fortress wall (2).
The date of construction of the stone revetment wall is disputed. It is possible that the southern and eastern sectors were started at the beginning of the second century, along with the towers, but that remaining sectors were not completed until the early third century. Evidence of two phases of reconstruction incorporating re-used stones has been found on all but the south side, accompanied in some cases by rubble in the ditch. It is suggested that reconstruction to the original width is to be dated to the start of the fourth century, but that doubling of the width may belong to the Saxon period.
