Description
Collapse of a 30m section of the city wall resulted in a controlled programme of dismantling and detailed recording, including excavation, with a view to reconstruction by specialist contractors (1). The excavation consisted of two small trenches: Trench 1 was located centrally within the line of a c8.5m long dismantled stretch of damaged city wall and wholly contained within the surviving outer and inner sandstone faces. Trench 2 formed the continuation of a pre-existing trench within a small area, surrounded by a brick retaining wall and located immediately east of the wall line (1)
