Description

The site consists of a block of land at Row level, on the east side of Bridge Street. It was primarily occupied by No's 25 - 29 at street level, and No's 29 - 35 at Row level. It has been occupied for most of the last century by the former Chester Chronicle offices and print works. The general fabric of the structures is primarily nineteenth century in origin, with later 1960's extensions. There is some potential for sub Roman activity although datable evidence was lacking. The evaluation has confirmed the presence of Roman structural evidence on the site with several phases of substantial masonry structures recorded. No medieval buildings were recorded however, although some paths and drains were noted. Modern disturbance by nineteenth century wall foundations were recorded in the upper levels of the trenches.
