Full Description
Traces of an early Roman structure were recorded during archaeological investigations to the rear of 25-29 Bridge Street in 1996. A trial trench (Trench K) excavated in the Fletcher’s Buildings passage recorded three post holes [Features X, Y, Z] cut into the natural bedrock at a depth of 3.02m below ground level. All post holes showed signs of significant truncation. Although no finds were recovered it is probable that they are late first century. It is suggested that they represent an early timber structure (1)
