Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out to inform proposed redevelopment at 12 - 22 Commonhall St., Chester. Six trial trenches were excavated, showing that substantial archaeological deposits survive. There were indications of Roman buildings, including a hearth, possibly from the fourth century. Saxon pits and pottery suggest buildings were present. In the medieval period, much of the site was behind the street frontage, and large pits with domestic material were recorded. Extensive cellaring took place in the post-medieval period, and modern disturbances were also identified.
