Full Description
During archaeological excavations at 12 – 22 Commonhall St. in 1991, a pit and a possible post hole that may be of Saxon period date were recorded (1). In Trial Pit 1, cut into a dark silty deposit also thought to be a Saxon period horizon (CHER 9031), was a small circular cut, 0.25m in diameter, interpreted as a possible post hole, and a square cut pit, containing Saxon pottery in addition to residual Roman material (1). The pit was excavated to a depth of 2.55m but the excavation did not reach its base. Possibly indicating more intensive Saxon period activity in this area than the ‘dark earth’ layer alone suggests, the nature of the structures or features that these cuts represent is unknown.
