Full Description
Traces of medieval activity consisting of pits and garden soils were recorded during two phases of archaeological investigations at 12-22 Commonhall Street in 1991 and again in 2003.
The initial archaeological evaluation, carried out by Chester Archaeology in 1991 consisted of a series of evaluation trenches excavated across the site that identified several deep pits containing quantities of ceramic and organic material, however later cellaring in the post medieval period substantially affected the survival of the medieval remains. Subsequent investigations carried out by Giffords in 2003 investigated a much larger area following the demolition of the existing buildings. The evidence consisted of a garden soil containing re-deposited building material from the lift pit of the excavations along with two pits cut into the layer that were subsequently overlain by a later medieval garden soil.
