Description
An archaeological evaluation undertaken to inform part of the Forum Redevelopment Scheme, following on from an audit of past excavations in the area of Princess and Hunter St., an audit that identified a gap in the archaeological records relating to the central part of the block. The audit confirmed the presence of major legionary buildings from the first to fourth centuries, Saxon structures, Medieval occupation concentrated on the street frontages and intensive seventeenth century occupation. Most of these remains have been recently impacted by development. Three evaluation trenches were excavated, demonstrating that a complex sequence of deposits from the first to seventeenth centuries survives at some locations to a depth of 2.26m.
