Description

In advance of redevelopment a trial trench 14m long by 3m wide (narrowing to 1.6m at its eastern half) was excavated in an area on Nicholas Street (1). The work demonstrated that the site had been levelled in the eighteenth century and this process removed the upper Roman levels at this location and the majority of the medieval deposits. The medieval period is represented by a wall footing and cess-pits containing finds, and the Roman period is represented by two phases of timber structures followed by two phases of stone buildings (1). Evidence for the precinct wall of the Black friars was also recorded (3).
