Full Description

Archaeological investigations to the rear of properties on Nicholas Street in 1974 recorded evidence of Roman activity from the first century into the third century. A potential road surface was identified to the east of the structure and contemporary with it. The road was made up of three distinct layers comprising a base layer of crushed sandstone followed by a clay layer and finally a second layer of crushed sandstone. A concrete floor of poor quality was also associated with this phase of activity, although dating evidence from this feature was limited, it is thought to be contemporary with the road surface.(4)
