Full Description

During excavations at 30 - 42 Nicholas St. in 1974, evidence of post medieval activities, impacting on earlier medieval remains at this location, were recorded (1). The stone from part of the boundary wall of the former Dominican Friary precinct (CHER 10317/1) was robbed, and the resulting trench filled with cess containing seventeenth century pottery.

In the overlying soil, a number of more ephemeral shallow pits were dug, in addition to a large square cess pit containing seventeenth to eighteenth century pottery (1). This latter cess pit was capped by a layer of clay, and modern demolition rubble overlay these features (1, 2).
