Abstract/Summary

Archaeological evaluation of land at the former General Wolfe Public House was undertaken in July 1996. The evaluation included documentary research and a sample excavation. The results of the desk-based research indicated the potential for the presence of deposits dating from Roman through to the post medieval periods, although intensive development of the site in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries reduced this potential. The results of the excavation, comprising three trial trenches and five test pits, indicated that the part of the development site near the street frontage has been extensively disturbed by modern development. The rear part of the site contained deep landscaping deposits and garden soil beneath which some ditch features were identified, probably of post medieval date.
