Monument record 14183 - Foundations of Nineteenth Century Workers' Cottages, Dakin's Yard

Please read our .

Summary

An excavation trench dug in 1996 on land to the north of Church Street recorded the foundations of structures potentially representing the northern side of a range of workers cottages arranged on the south side of Dakin's Yard. The yard and cottages are depicted on historic Ordnance Survey mapping dating to 1850. A series of pits were also recorded, some are thought to be foundations pits into which larger posts originally were set, also some smaller pits are thought to represent post holes. One large pit is interpreted as a rubbish pit. The limited area of excavation precluded the identification of any structure plan but it is thought that the pits could have belonged to an earlier timber building, although no dating evidence was found in direct association with the pits. Residual pottery and a clay tobacco pipe stem dating to the eighteenth century indicate activity dating back to this date at least.
