Archaeological evaluation of land adjacent to the former General Wolfe Public House was undertaken in July 1996. The evaluation included documentary research and a sample excavation. The public house is depicted on historic mapping dating to the nineteenth century, with gardens to the rear/north. The 1850 Ordnance Survey map shows a dramatic change in the townscape with the establishment of wireworks to the east and an area of cramped workers cottages arranged around Dakin's Yard, in the plot to the west of the General Wolfe. Ordnance Survey mapping of 1880 shows further dramatic change with two new streets of terraced housing, General Street and Litherland Row, constructed in the garden areas to the north of the General Wolfe and Dakin's Row.
Two excavation trenches were dug, trench 1 to the west of the General Wolfe and trench 2 to the north. Trench 1 encountered the foundations of a structure which is thought to be one of the workers' cottages lined on the southern extent of Dakin's Yard (see 14183). Trench 2 also encountered the foundations of a building, presumably one of the line of terraced houses to the east of General Street (see 14184). Two potential post medieval boundary ditches were also recorded (see 14185).
