Full Description

Roman road - Chester to Wirral. A Roman road running the length of the Wirral has long been suspected. The alignment started from the Northgate of the fortress and followed a course through to Mollington. This line is based on on straight lines in various places marked on the OS first edition (1). This is also based on an alignment given in (2) that shows a road running from Chester up through the Wirral. From Mollington to Ledsham, then by minor roads and lanes to Street Hey, Willason (3). According to O'Dwyer its route ran from Mollington Causeway via Townfield Lane, Hill Farm, a path to Powey Lane Farm, Newhouses (Capenhurst), Ledsham Village, the lane to Ledsham Hall, the lane to Heathfield and then Street Hey Lane (4). Margary traces it north of here by hedgerows to Rabyhouse Farm, where a lane continues for a further half mile north, east of Raby Village (3). O'Dwyer suggests it continues north via Vineyard Farm, Windy Harbour, Poulton Hey, Spital, Teehay Lane, King's Road, Brough Road, through Birkenhead to Wallasey (4). VCH suggest destination was Meols (5).
