Site Event/Activity record ECH2618 - Excavation to the rear of 35 Hospital Street (William's Chemist/Kiltearn Medical Centre), Nantwich, 1991 (John Ray)

A small excavation occurred in 1991 to the rear of Williams Chemists (35 Hospital Street/Kiltearn Medical Centre); it was undertaken by John Ray who had knowledge of the site from a previous excavation in 1975 (ECH2617). A rubbish pit and dumped material including mussel shells was recorded, associated with a piece of Midland yellow pottery sherd from a medicine jar (1550-1650). The rubbish pit was waterlogged and contained numerous finds including wine bottles, leather shoe soles, wooden stakes, animal bones, skulls and horns and pottery (594 sherds of purple ware, slip ware, mottled ware, shiny black ware, yellow ware and cistercian ware). A fragment of medieval tile was also recovered. (1-2) Correspondence dated 20/03/1992 from one of the Doctors at Kiltearn Medical Centre to the County Archaeologist confirming that a number of the artefacts from the site (pottery, ceramic artefacts and leather shoes) were to be displayed in a showcase in the surgery.
