Abstract/Summary

Excavation in 1978 on a waterlogged site near the River Weaver revealed a wide shallow medieval ditch, possibly that of the castle, and recovered a large and well stratified collection of medieval pottery together with artefacts of leather and wood. Post-medieval pottery into early 19th century and clay pipes from northern centres are also illustrated. A small collection of Roman finds was associated with deposits of industrial character. Animal bones are briefly analysed and a preliminary report on other environmental material is provided.
