Full Description

The surface area of the Maiden Castle Hillfort contains the remains of at least ten slit trenches, which were dug as firing positions when the site was in use as a military training area in the second half of the twentieth century. These survive as rectangular shallow depressions, measuring about 1m wide and between 1.7 - 2.8m long. A number of other slit trenches recorded on site have now been infilled (1).

Please note that the SAM designation refers to the hillfort, and not to this quarrying activity.
