Description

A detailed survey of Maiden Castle was produced by Jeremy Milln in 1993. This was produced to inform the management plan of the site, and provided the first accurate depiction of the site. This shows the earthworks largely as they survive today, although some of the possible army slit trenches, marked as 'pits' on the plan, have now been in-filled. This was followed in 1994 by the production of a 3D contour plan of Varley's spoil heap (1934 - 1935), which was subsequently excavated to check for any possible artifactural material that may have been missed. Material from this excavation was used to fill erosion scars along the Sandstone Trail (1).
