Summary

This section of the city walls extends from Thimbleby’s Tower (CHER 12000/22) and the Old Newgate (or Wolf Gate) (CHER 12000/24), and is angled to approximately follow the line of the inner rampart at the south-east corner of the former Roman legionary fortress. The medieval stonework dates to between the late eleventh and early twelfth century, and appears to have been damaged between 1644 and 1646 during the Civil War. This section of the walls was stripped of defensive features and converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and repaired throughout the post medieval period.

Full Description

This section of the city walls extends from Thimbleby’s Tower (CHER 12000/22) and the Old Newgate (or Wolf Gate) (CHER 12000/24), and is angled to approximately follow the line of the inner rampart at the south-east corner of the former Roman legionary fortress. The medieval stonework dates to between the late eleventh and early twelfth century, and appears to have been damaged between 1644 and 1646 during the Civil War. This section of the walls was stripped of defensive features and converted to a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and repaired throughout the post medieval period. It is of red coursed rubble sandstone, and has been partly refaced. This length of the wall is approximately 60m, with the wall walk about 2m wide. The inner face has a projecting plinth. The area lay behind the Newgate St. frontage into the early twentieth century (11).
