SJ4066SE CITY WALLS 595-1/4/117 Part of City Wall from Thimbleby's 28/07/55 Tower to Old Newgate (Formerly Listed as: City Walls & Towers incl. foundations of SE angle Roman Fortress wall & tower)

Length of City Wall angled approximately to follow the line of the inner rampart at the south-east corner of the former Roman legionary fortress (qv). Late C11 to early C12, probably damaged 1644-1646 during the Civil War, stripped of defensive features and converted to a raised promenade 1702-8 and repaired in various periods. Red coursed rubble sandstone, partly refaced. This length of the wall is approx 60m, with the wall walk approx 2m wide. The inner face has a projecting plinth.
