Description

Small scale excavation undertaken at 26 Foregate Street in advance of development proposals. Excavations date to 1995 and have only recently been written up, there are therefore limitations imposed on the results through incomplete or inconsistent recording and analysis. Four major phases of activity pre-dating the present use was recorded during the excavation, however all phases appear to be post medieval in date. Structural evidence at the base of the trench suggested the presence of one or more buildings in the area, this was overlain by a series of deposits that appear to be agricultural in nature. Phase 3 features are dominated by deep pits and a build up of loamy deposits while the final phase is represented by three wall foundations that share a close similarity to structures recorded on the OS 1874 map.
