Description
This event was a trial excavation, by hand, of three trenches at 106 - 110 Foregate St., bound to the north by that street, and to the south by Forest St. In total, the maximum area evaluated measured 30m north - south by 13.5m east - west. Trench I, the most northern area, measured approximately 1.5m square contained a thick horizon of rubble deposits containing brick, sealing a linear ditch feature, cutting deposits containing Roman material. Trench II, 1.5 by 2.4m, contained extensive post-medieval deposits containing brick and clay pipe fragments, sealing mixed deposits containing medieval and Roman material. Trench III revealed a large pit containing Roman material, interpreted as a midden, that the bottom of which was not reached. Natural sediment or bedrock was not reached. Waterlogged deposits were also reported from this excavation (4).
