Description

Report contains the results of an archaeological impact assessment undertaken in November 2001 in the ear of Hunter Street as part of the wider assessment of the archaeological impact of the Northgate redevelopment proposals. This phase of the assessment consisted of the hand excavations of six test pits, two in the car park west of the former bowling green on the south side of Hunter Street and four in the car park of Commerce House. Significant Roman deposits were recorded at the former Bowling Green site and a depth of between 1.10m and 300mm. The results from the test pits at Commerce House have indicated that this location has been raised artificially in fairly modern times with an overburden of at least 1m. It is likely, however, that Roman evidence is preserved beneath the overburden.
