Find Spot record 10100/35 - Post medieval finds at Commerce House

Two phases of archaeological evaluation at the car park at Commerce House, Hunter Street in 2001-2002 recorded a quantity of post medieval material from five trenches.

The first phase of evaluation in 2001 comprised four test pits (No's 3-6) from which a substantial amount of post medieval material was recovered primarily of an 18th-19th century date but with some 17th century wares. In addition an assemblage of other finds comprised 18th-19th century clay pipe fragments including two bowl fragments of a mid 17th century date, glass of an 18th-19th century date and an illegible coin of a possible 18th century date. The second phase of evaluation in 2002 comprised a further test pit (No 7) from which a small amount of 18th-19th century pottery and some earlier 16th century fragments. A small quantity of additional finds were recovered including some clay pipe fragments, glass and metal fragments. (2)
