Full Description
Evidence of a late Roman demolition layer was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Hunter Street car park (formerly the bowling green). A test pit excavated towards the centre of the area recorded a deposit [Context 6] at a depth of 1.1m below current ground surface containing significant quantities of Roman ceramic building material. A second test pit excavated to the north also recorded a similar layer [Context 18] at a depth of 1.15m below current ground level. As the test pits were discontinued at this point it is not known how extensive the Roman archaeological evidence may be at this site. (1)
