Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out in the Frodsham St. Car Park in connection with proposals for development of New Market Hall on the site (1). An initial rapid archaeological overview of the site was followed by a more detailed desk-based assessment, and these preliminary studies concluded in general terms that the area contains a well-preserved, important sequence of archaeological deposits dating from prehistory to modern times. A total of six trenches was excavated, five within the car park area, and one alongside the footings to an existing flight of steps. Roman, including additional evidence of the legionary parade ground, residual Saxon material and medieval remains were identified, as were two modern air raid shelters (1).
