Summary

Evidence of infilling of the Roman defensive ditch in the medieval period suggest this was a long lived feature in the landscape, only gradually being levelled over a period of several hundred years.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations at Frodsham Street in 2011 recorded evidence of medieval fills in the upper layers of the Roman ditch (CHER 8207/1). In trench 1, several fragments of broadly medieval pottery were recovered from the soil while in trench 5 at the northern end of the site, another soil layer was identified as the upper most fill of the ditch, beliieved to be the same monument (1)
