Description

A watching brief carried (14427/96.R03) out between November 2007 and February 2008 on land adjacent to a new parade ring in the racecourse area, Chester. The remains of late post medieval features associated with temporary structures erected during fairs, circuses and race meetings, as shown in a mid-nineteenth century illustration of the race course, were identified. No archaeological deposits dating to the period prior to the eighteenth century were uncovered, but it was concluded that any earlier archaeological deposits may have been sealed by the exposed naturally formed silts, and would not be affected by the current programme of works.
