Full Description
Following the collapse of a 30m section of the city wall, a controlled programme of dismantling and detailed recording, including excavation, was carried out (1). Post medieval soil layers and a possible rubbish pit dating to the seventeenth century were identified in Trench 2. The soil layers were compact, set against a buttress base, and contained charcoal and some fragments of coal, while the pit fill contained fragments of lime-based wall plaster, and a small assemblage of seventeenth century pottery (1).
