Full Description
The foundations of a sandstone interval tower belonging to the Roman fortress’ masonry wall was identified during a rapid archaeological recording, carried out during essential repairs to a section of collapsed city wall in St John St, Chester, in 2009 (1). The remains of the east –west wall lie close to an area commonly shown on published plans of the Roman fortress to have been occupied by one of the many stone interval towers distributed evenly around the defensive circuit. The c1.1m width of these foundations, together with the offset recorded within the courses of masonry, were convincingly similar to previously excavated interval tower foundations. The wall foundations were cut and built into the first century turf and clay rampart, and organic patches noted within the latter contexts indicate that clear traces of the timber strapping that held the rampart together are likely to survive at lower levels (1).
