Description

The two trial trenches excavated at 105 - 109 Foregate St. demonstrate that archaeological deposits do survive at this location to some depth (1). Part of a Roman wall foundation was recorded in Trial Pit 2, and both trial pits also had disturbed deposits containing Roman and medieval material. Trial Pit 1 also had a possible rubbish pit of post-medieval date, and Trial Pit 2 had a medieval pit cut into the bedrock (thereby disturbing all Roman deposits at this location) (1). It is also reported that waterlogged deposits were found during this excavation (3), and the excavators do report the waterline apprearing at 2m below ground level (1).
