Description

Archaeological watching brief undertaken during ground disturbance in relation to the construction of an electricity sub station at the northeast edge of Grosvenor Park in 2002 (1). Four possible phases of activity were identified on this site. The earliest is represented by a salty clay layer containing a cobble surface and Romano-British pottery. Based on the character of the finds, the report suggests the presence of a high status building in the area, as yet unlocated. The second phase is represented by a sandstone drain with no associated dating evidence, although is certainly pre-Victorian according to stratigraphic analysis. Phase three is represented by brick and rubble wall footings of a probable nineteenth century date while the final phase is twentieth century in date and relates to the construction of an air raid shelter from World War II. This shelter was decommissioned between 1945 and 1960 (1).
