Full Description
A silty clay and cobble layer containing Roman pottery, likely the same as a 'cobbled' surface identified by an earlier evaluation at this location (earlier event: ECH4272). The surface is represented by a number of sandstone fragments up to 0.2m across, but it was not possible to investigate this feature extensively, as ground disturbance was to stop at this level (1m) below the surface.
The finds from this layer included fine ware pottery dating to the first or second centuries, and roof tile fragments. The excavators suggested that the deposit and finds relate to a high status building that is not yet located (1).
