Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out at the site of the Linenhall Stables, Stanley St., Chester. The evaluation was comprised of seven trenches, and demonstrate that remains survive from the Roman period, medieval, seventeenth century and modern times. The remains of Linen Hall were identified in Trenches 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7, taking the form of brick and stone structures, culverts and surfaces. Post medieval cultivation deposits were present in Trenches 2 - 7, confirming the impression given by historic mapping. Trenches 4 - 7 demonstrate that the southern side of the site contains significant remains of the medieval friary church and its associated cemetery. Roman activity was evidenced in Trenches 1, 3, 5 and 6, which implied low levels of occupation possibly associated with cultivated fields. The large amounts of Roman brick and tile recovered from medieval and post medieval deposits were probably derived from the bathhouse located to the south of the site.
