Description

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in July 1996 on land adjacent to Congleton Town Hall. Five trial trenches were excavated and archaeological features, deposits and finds dating from the medieval and post medieval periods were identified, including the probable traces of a demolished timber structure of wattle and daub construction. Sealed beneath the medieval archaeology and clearly earlier in date were features cut into the natural glacial sands, however, no finds other than a little animal bone and one fragment of worked flint were recovered, possibly indicating a prehistoric date for these features.
