Summary

The old Police Station, now the Congleton Museum, was built in 1870, adjoining the new Town Hall and later provided accommodation for the Chief Constable. The Old Police Station symbolises a past self sufficient community, the building was central to town life. As part of an archaeological evaluation, undertaken in July 1996, three trial trenches were excavated immediately to the south of the Museum; they were located with the hope of uncovering remains of a demolished 19th century police station building known to have occupied the site. Brick foundations were found in all three trenches surviving to a depth of 500mm below modern ground level. Additionally, in two of the trenches, the remains of earlier 19th or 18th century brick walls and a cobbled surface were recorded. They appear to follow a similar alignment to the later police station. Trenches 3 and 4 also produced evidence for 18th and 19th century timber structures in the form of brick and stone-packed post holes and a possible 18th century wall foundation or timber beam slot.

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in July 1996 on land adjacent to Congleton Town Hall and Museum. Three trial trenches (trenches 1, 3 and 4) were excavated immediately to the south of the Museum, and were located with the hope of uncovering remains of a demolished police station building known to have occupied the site in the 19th century. Brick foundations were found in all three trenches surviving to a depth of 500mm below modern ground level. Additionally, in trenches 1 and 3, the remains of earlier 19th or 18th century brick walls and a cobbled surface were recorded. They appear to follow a similar alignment to the later police station. Trenches 3 and 4 also produced evidence for 18th and 19th century timber structures in the form of brick and stone-packed post holes and a possible 18th century wall foundation or timber beam slot.
