Please read our .

Summary

Trial trenches excavated in 1996 recorded a thick, late medieval deposit adjacent to Congleton Town Hall. The deposit was rich in artefactual evidence, containing pottery with a date range of the late 14th to 16th centuries, although the absence of Cistercian wares may suggest a narrower date of the late 14th to 15th centuries. The deposit also contained a high percentage of charcoal and daub suggesting the presence of timber buildings in the vicinity.
