Site Event/Activity record ECH3565 - A534 Wheelock By-Pass: Desk-Based Assessment, August 1993

Archaeological assessment undertaken in August 1993 to investigate the route of a proposed bypass of Wheelock, Cheshire, linking Sandback Inner Relief Road with the Haslington Bypass. The assessment identified that the route will run through of close to a number of archaeological sites, including the site of Wheelock Mill which has origins in the 14th century. Although the mill was demolished around 1900 and its pond filled in, the pond is still visible as are associated leats and dam. A salt works is also known to have existed in Sandbach from the 17th century. The study has shown that the location of the salt works in 1911 are different from those of the early 19th century and earlier. The route of the bypass will also impact an area of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and also may affect remains of the Roman road linking Wilderspool to Holditch in Staffordshire. (1)
