Salt works constructed soon after the canal in 1775. Supplied with brine from the spring in Hassall township and on the site of Thomas Stephens' late 17th century works which had presumably been demolished to make way for the canal. Became an Inn in the mid 19th century and up to the 1940's. Now a farm.

Archaeological assessment undertaken in 1993 in advance of the A534 Wheelock Bypass the route of which passes close to the post medieval salt working site. Discusses that in 1697 and 1698 there is a record of a dispute between Thomas Stephens (mill owner) and a former employee, Richard Proudlove (see source 3).
