Description

Southern ends of two barrack blocks standing back-to-back were revealed in three trenches during rebuilding at Folliot House. Site c.91m south of north wall and west of Northgate Street and 36.5m north of Hunter Street. East block was 8.5m wide, outer rooms 2.4m x 3.18m and inner rooms of 3.8m sq, with a veranda 2.4m wide. No trace of timber predecessors. Earliest occupation was early C2. East block was of two periods - stone foundations were levelled to receive timber-framed barracks which were subsequently strengthened for a stone upper part and the floor level raised in the later C2. An E-W wall was found 2m S of the barracks & possibly belonged to the building on the Odeon site (RN:3000/2/6) (1). Southern end of two barrack blocks recorded west of the via decumana at Northgate Street in 1955 (1)
